Hogwarts, a History Sweater

Back in 2016 when I first discovered hand dyed yarn. I found some podcasts on YouTube and found that there was the whole awesome online fiber community. It didn't take me long to find Meghan's gorgeous yarns. Meghan is the dyer behind Bad Wolf Girl Studios. You can find her shop on Etsy under that name. She is also active on IG as badwolfgirlsitsandknits and she has a really good podcast on YouTube.

Meghan began designing in 2018 with the Pumpking Hat and Sea Glass top patterns. She says that writing up the patterns she created really fueled her creativity and brought it up to a whole new level.

Last year she started designing colorwork hats and sweaters. Her first colorwork sweater was the Hogwarts, a History sweater. With this sweater she learned many things including sweater math, grading for sizes, charts, and ease. That Hogwarts sweater was the foundation for the designs she is now known for. She plans to continue offering size inclusive patterns with both fandom inspired and classic designs. And like all of us, she is very grateful for this community and to be able to work as an artist. And she is very good at what she does.

"I have such a bringing knitting art and fandoms together" - Meghan (Bad Wolf Girl)

I must admit that at first the amount of colorwork in her sweaters was really intimidating for me. Colorwork is something that I have had a love/hate relationship with for awhile now. I do love the final result but I do not always enjoy the process of knitting the colorwork.

Then last fall I finally decided to just give her beautiful sweaters a try. And guess what! I ended up loving making these sweaters. I started with the Hogwarts, a History sweater. I used leftover yarn for the contrast color and dyed a new color up (Something Wicked) just for this sweater. That color is one of my all time favorites.

Harry Potter Deathly Hollows Sweater

For the Hogwarts sweater, I did make the body a lot longer than called for in the pattern. Instead of ribbing at the bottom, I did the glasses chart and then did an i-cord bind off. I also added in a moon phase chart that is not actually part of the pattern, but Meghan did design the moon chart. I love my Hogwarts sweater so much and have gotten lots of compliments on it.

When I saw on her IG stories that she needed some testers for a new design, I volunteered. I saw the snowflakes and thought that would be great for a Christmas sweater. I had no idea what colors to use for it though. In the end I feel in love with a new teal and blue color that I dyed up for the winter solstice and named Longest Night (to celebrate the longest night of the year and the start of my 2nd favorite season). Silver Wings ended up being the contrast color and I couldn't be more happy with the final result.

Frozen Fractal Sweater

For the Frozen Fractal Sweater, I did end up doing 3/4 length sleeves because I live in Tennessee where it ended up being nearly 70 degrees for Christmas. The weather here changes all the time. Plus every house we visit at Christmas is like a hundred degrees so you can't wear long sleeves.

You can find Meghan's designs on Ravelry here. The Frozen Fractal sweater pattern will be released January 18, 2020 and you can find it here.

I also have kits for my version of the Frozen Fractal Sweater here. Remember to use the appropriate discount code at checkout when purchasing sweater quantities of yarn. If you want any other color combos just let me know. The kit is for the fingering weight version, if you are interested in the DK version, let me know.

I plan to make her Halloween Heart Sweater at some point this year and I am excited to see how her designs evolve and grow in the future.
